After years of promoting products as an affiliate, I learned the hard way what works and what doesn’t work.
In this article, I’m going to reveal the 3 important tips to make more money as an affiliate.
What Is An Affiliate Marketer?
An affiliate marketer is someone who is specialized in affiliate marketing. He earns a commission if he recommends a product to a person and that person buys it.
You might be wondering: how is this trackable? As an affiliate marketer, the company or vendor whose products you are doing marketing for will give you a unique link. If you share this link with someone you think is interested in the product because it will solve his or her problems and that person clicks on this link, he or she will be redirected to the website of a product.
When this person buys the product, the affiliate system of the vendor immediately notices that the visitor came from you and reward you a with a commission for bringing the client and the vendor together.
Earning money as an affiliate is great because everyone without technical knowledge or a website can promote a product and earn money with it.
You don’t need to do any customer service and you don’t have to create your own product.
It is a simple and safe way to make money on the internet.
So what companies am I talking about?
Did you know that one the biggest e-commerce store in the world has their own affiliate marketing program?
Yes, I am talking about Amazon.
You are probably buying stuff on Amazon every single week and chances are people are making commissions from the products that you bought. But what about Apple, or Samsung or Walmart?
They all have an affiliate program.
You have an understanding of the basics now. You just send people (traffic) to certain products and once they buy, you get compensated for that.
At the beginning of the article, I mentioned that some affiliate marketers are earning big bucks, while others are struggling. So it is not that easy as you might be thinking.
Well, keep reading if you want to know how you can make more money with affiliate marketing.
Tip #1: Attract More Relevant Visitors
Imagine, you teleport a visitor from the McDonalds to a clothing store and a visitor from the clothing store to the McDonalds. Has the odds of buying something increased or decreased if they had stayed at their original place?
This is easy…
There is no scientific research known that they have tried it and this example is of course way too extreme.
But you can apply the same principle to the internet.
If you send a visitor to a website he or she has no interest in, that person would likely not purchase anything.
The best way to make money as an affiliate marketer is to promote products your audience will love. It is your task to find the right audience.
And of course, there are niches that are huge and evergreen, like weight loss for example.
I mean who doesn’t want to look more fit and live healthier. But there are millions of people interested in weight loss and your targeting is still too broad.
What I recommend to do is to niche down more. So only focus on women who want to lose 10 pounds or even better women who want to lose 10 pounds within 3 weeks without going to the gym.
Your audience is really small now and if you are able to find a product that will suit their needs, you can make a lot of money. Because you put a product in front of the right people. You introduced them to a product that is perfect and is exactly what they are looking for.
But if you kept focusing on people that want to lose weight in general your conversion ratio would drop massively, because of the lack of proper targeting.
So always ask yourself who your audience is and try to niche it down to find relevant people.

The more (relevant) people click on your affiliate link the more money you earn. If there are 100 people per day clicking on your link, there is a big chance that you can make a decent income from affiliate marketing, depending on the product of course.
Believe me, getting 100 clicks per day on the internet is not as difficult as it seems. There are different ways to get many visitors, one of my favorite ways is through search engine optimization.
If you write an article that provides a lot of value and you craft it around specific keywords to make it as relevant as possible, it has a great chance it will rank high in search engines like Google. This means you will get visitors that are looking for a solution when they search for this keyword.
The same applies to Youtube, the second biggest search engine in the world. If you put together videos on certain topics that are relevant for your audience, they will find you and click on your links.
There are many other methods to attract the right people, of course, think about paid advertising like Google Adsense for example.
The best part is that you don’t need any technical skills to get more traffic to your website or affiliate links.
But don’t make the mistake to be active on every platform because a lack of focus will result in a lack of money. So if one method doesn’t work out, simply switch and keep focussing on that one for a while. Give it some time and crush it.
Tip #3: Promote The Right Product
Not every product on the market will make you good money. Unfortunately, I come across too many bad stuff sometimes and promoting these products has negative effects on your business.
Let me touch on 2 effects.
First, you would not make a decent income, simply because buyers are unsatisfied. And what would an unsatisfied customer do with a product they just bought?
That’s right…
They will refund it, which means you will not get paid and you wasted your time and efforts promoting this crap.
Secondly, if you have built a following, a group of people that like, know and trust you, and you start recommending them bad products they aren’t going to take you seriously next time, which means fewer sales or in the worst case no sales at all.
You slowly destroy your positive image.
So always make sure to test it out yourself, before you recommend it to others.
Besides the quality of the product, the commission structure plays a huge role in earning much or less money as an affiliate.
This could easily be the difference between a 2 or 3 figure and a 5 figure earner.
Let’s say that with one product you get a commission of 10% and with the other you’ll get a commission of 50%.
Both cost $500. This is a difference of $240, which is insane. I’d rather put my energy and time into promoting the latter, to be honest.
Where are you going to find vendors or companies that pay out 50% commission?
Look for digital products, like an online course, software or ebooks. In most cases they have low overhead costs, so they will still be profitable if they share 50% of the revenue. Affiliate networks like Clickbank, Market health, CJ.com and Jvzoo offer high commission products.
Some vendors are willing to give you 90% or 100% of the initial sale because they know they will be profitable in the back (email marketing).
Once they acquired a customer they also have collected their email address, which is an important asset in the digital marketing world.
